• Judge Denied Parole in Sex Toy Case
  

A former judge, Donald Thompson, convicted of exposing himself while presiding over jury trials by using a sexual device under his robes was denied parole. Prosecutors claimed Thompson used a device called a penis pump while presiding over trials between 2002 and 2003. Thompson's attorney, Rob Nigh, told the board his client maintained his innocence and deserved to be considered for early release. "He's lost everything. He's lost his profession. He's lost the ability to be a lawyer. He's lost the ability to ever be a judge," Nigh said.

• The Case of the Broken Dildo

Orange County’s Marcelino P. Castro owns the most expensive broken dildo in the world at $48,000. This dildo had an attached handle so a user could manipulate its motion from different angles. Castro decided to pleasure himself. During the heat of passion, the handle broke off and the dildo became lodged deep in his rectum. The next morning, Castro told his bosses, police, paramedics, firemen, state insurance investigators and later emergency room doctors that he’d been gang-raped at work by “two large dark men, probably Samoan.” His story was considered a fabrication and he was arrested. At trial he confessed. His punishment: a six-month sentence, serve five years’ probation and pay $48,000 in restitution for wasting everyone’s time.

• Naked Teen at Drive-Thru

A teen accused of ordering from at least three fast food drive-thrus nude faces an indecent exposure charge. David Gatton, 18, of Columbia City, was found in the parking lot of a McDonald's by a sheriff's deputy after police received a call that the teen had been nude when he ordered from his car at the Arby's drive-thru, police said.



• Molester Blames Wife's Bingo Habit

A man who pleaded guilty to molesting two girls told a judge he did it because of his wife's excessive bingo playing. "My wife was never home," Floyd Kinney Jr. said during his plea hearing Friday. Records say Kinney molested one of the girls, now 26, from 1992-97. He sexually assaulted the second girl, now 17, for a year beginning in January 2005, records show. "Some people, when their wives are not home, decide to do other things, like clean their living rooms," Northampton County Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden said. "Your behavior is beyond the pale." Kinney pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated indecent assault. The felony charges carry a combined maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

• Naked Crack Addict attacked by Alligator

Carlos Mayid couldn't see Adrian Apgar being attacked by an alligator early Wednesday, but he could hear him. "A gator's got me," Apgar replied, his voice faint in the background. Mayid called 911. Polk County deputies arrived about two minutes later and soon reached Apgar in the water. He was naked, slumped over in the alligator's jaws in chest-deep water on the east side of Lake Parker. After a "tug-of-war" match with the gator, three deputies and their sergeant were able to rescue Apgar and carry him to shore. The entire rescue took about 20 minutes.
Apgar told the deputies he had been smoking crack cocaine and fell asleep on the shore when the alligator attacked him. The Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that Apgar suffered a broken arm, a nearly severed arm, significant trauma to his buttocks and leg and was critically injured.

Saudi Arabia vs Iran in Iraq?

As America searches for a way out of the war in Iraq, indications are that regional powers Saudi Arabia and Iran may have vested interests in protecting their influence with the Sunnis and Shiites respectively in this "almost civil war" torn country.

The Sunni sect of Islam is the dominant force in much of the Middle East. Only in Iran and Iraq are the Shiites in the majority. The fact that Saudi Arabia is the de facto "holy land" of the Muslim faith, and Mecca is the "holy city" to which many Muslims try to visit at least once in their lifetime (The Hajj), give this country a very special status in the Muslim world. The Saudis are seen as the Keepers of the Faith.

If US troops leave Iraq before the sectarian violence between the Sunnis and the Shiites is resolved, the situation could explode into a regional crisis, with the Saudis backing the minority Sunni Muslims and Iran bankrolling the majority Shiites. This could turn into a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Both countries have significant military might and financial strength to support their side.

This gives new meaning to the visit the vice-President Dick Cheney made to Saudi Arabia recently, at the request of the Saudi government. Cheney was told: "Iran was trying to establish itself as the dominant regional power through its influence in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories."

The Saudis, America's closest allies in the Arab World, were reported - in an article last week by Nawaf Obaid, a senior government security adviser- to be considering providing anti-US Sunni military leaders with funding, logistical support and even arms - as Iran already does for Shia militia in Iraq.

Although a Saudi government spokesman yesterday sought to play down Mr Obaid's view as personal, saying it "does not reflect in any way the kingdom's policy and positions, which invariably uphold the security, unity and stability of Iraq with all its sects", Riyadh has also expressed its fears about Iranian’s regional power play to other Western states.

The Iranians on the other hand seem to be delighted with the way things are working out in their favor:

In Tehran, Iranian leaders have made clear that they believe they are the big winners from America's involvement in Iraq. "The kind of service that the Americans, with all their hatred, have done us — no superpower has ever done anything similar," Mohsen Rezai, secretary-general of the powerful Expediency Council that advises the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamanei, boasted on state television recently."

America destroyed all our enemies in the region. It destroyed the Taliban. It destroyed Saddam Hussein… The Americans got so stuck in the soil of Iraq and Afghanistan that if they manage to drag themselves back to Washington in one piece, they should thank God. America presents us with an opportunity rather than a threat — not because it intended to, but because it miscalculated. They made many mistakes".

Top Ten Lists

To be in the TOP TEN is usually considered to be some kind of honor or special achievement. There are top ten lists that are desirable, for example: Songs, Movies, Cars. There are also some top ten lists that are not so desirable, for example: FBI's Most Wanted. In fact we humans have a penchant for making lists of everything from the mundane to the weird. Freedoms under Attack

Newt Gingrich recently gave a speech saying: the country will be forced to reexamine freedom of speech to meet the threat of terrorism.

This comes shortly after President Bush signed into law a bill passed by the 109th Congress that severely curtailed Habeas Corpus.

Privacy has also taken a huge hit since the terrorist attack of 9/11/01. Millions of Americans have had their telephone conversations recorded, without their knowledge, under the government's wire tapping program. Just recently the Department of Homeland Security also admitted that they have been assigning scores, rating the risk that travelers are either terrorists or criminals. This applies to every person (American or visitor) entering or leaving the US by air sea or land. This program is called the Automated Targeting System or ATS.

The scores are based on ATS' analysis of their travel records and other data, including items such as where they are from, how they paid for tickets, their motor vehicle records, past one-way travel, seating preference and what kind of meal they ordered.

Apparently Homeland Security is very proud of this program and the data that has been collected on millions of people:

The Homeland Security Department called the program "one of the most advanced targeting systems in the world" and said the nation's ability to spot criminals and other security threats "would be critically impaired without access to this data."

The few civil liberties lawyers and even law enforcement officials who knew of this program were led to believe that it would only be used to screen cargo. After realizing the full scope of ATS, David Sobel of the Electronic Frontier Foundation said:

"It's probably the most invasive system the government has yet deployed in terms of the number of people affected."

"Some individuals will be denied the right to travel and many the right to travel free of unwarranted interference."

Sobel also raises the possibility that faulty risk assessments could cost innocent people jobs in shipping or travel, government contracts, licenses or other benefits.

The government says some or all of the ATS data about an individual may be shared with state, local and foreign governments for use in hiring decisions and in granting licenses, security clearances, contracts or other benefits. In some cases, the data may be shared with courts, Congress and even private contractors.

Even though a number of agencies can request this data on individuals, if you are the subject of an unfavorable risk assessment there is no recourse to have it changed. You are not allowed to see the file and you will not be told how and with what information your score was determined.

"Everybody else can see it, but you can't," Stephen Yale-Loehr, an immigration lawyer who teaches at Cornell Law school, said in an interview.

All risk assessments will be saved by Homeland Security for a period of 40 years.

The department says that 87 million people a year enter the country by air and 309 million enter by land or sea.

It seems as if some politicians are not happy with the US Constitution and are trying to whittle away at the protections and freedoms that have been enshrined in this document by our Founding Fathers. Have the terrorists won? Have they made us so afraid of them that we are willing to tamper with the document that defines us as a nation?
